Lesson in color

IMAG0245[1]

I wasn’t even going to write in my journal this week BUT here I am. Seems like a great summary for my week.  Seems like I started the week in a routine. I don’t like routine. I love not knowing— it’s the best!  I keep getting all of these awesome tips and ideas: words of James Victore.  “Learn EVERYTHING about art, forget it, and create” he says.   What a wonderful master plan!  Another quick You tube video on this amazing artist and her fabulous tips on my most favorite element of all-COLOR. “If you’re going to paint a red apple, mix the red with it’s compliment green to add form.  Oh I should make this a side project! I also found out about this awesome book, ITTEN The Elements of Color. The best part of my week is that I finally, not sure why today was the day but it was,  sat down and read my rough draft. Two months ago I sat for three glorious hours a day rewriting my script. I put it away until today and read it. Not a bad story AT ALL but there’s lots to do.

Yes it’s a big task and so is immersing myself in the world of Art History and King Lear. It’s not, but the feeling like I want to learn it all, paint and create at the same time… is. For now I’ll start with simple objects that I can draw like leaves. I printed up some pictures for reference and then painted going from light to dark.I mixed things up and outlined with a crayon. Maybe I don’t want to outline with a complementary color.IMAG0248[1]

Forget the Fun in Art?

Teaching language arts to a 4th grade class was awesome. I think about them and the words,” This is fun”.  Makes me smile. Yeah the word Fun in a classroom where learning happens is PROBABLY the best way to learn. I think of the little girl who whispered in my ear “You are a fun teacher” I think of the students in the adult transition class who….the girl who dances moving with each rhythm… feeling the need to raise up the volume. The boy who figured out a funnier way to separate each bead. The boy–I mean awesome artist who colored a mosaic. When I asked him about the colors he  simply shows me the four markers. ” I just colored” he says.

Oh the 2-year-old boy who bangs on pots and pans. He wanted to make music and now he’s a huge artist.

I think of the artist who’s had his work in the finest New York museum. He hosts retreats and workshops. He writes his letters messy. That’s what his clients love the most. It’s true! It’s what he says that invigorates my mind!

I eavesdropped on a conversation. They were talking about the same thing. When an author was asked how he wrote an amazing book, he simply said he just wrote it and wanted others to enjoy it. That’s it nothing complex.

What do all these people have in common? They are just creating–no rules-no doubt just I’m going to do this because I feel like it. Oh and they nurture their talent. THEY ARE IN THE MOMENT LOVING THEMSELVES AND LOVING LIFE. Don’t you need this to be the best. If you’re bored with the task at hand then change it up. YES.

So what a coincidence I’ve been doing the same. I painted over old watercolor paper but who’s asking. This is my journal. Love the orange color I mixed up. I like the vibrant orange and the spontaneity in the letters!

IMAG0233[1]

So I ‘ll keep making mistakes–but that’s it they’re not mistakes. They are proof that I’m learning! It’s all how you look at it!

Oh I love working with straws but the lettering didn’t quite work out. The blue and orange is awesome. Next week I’ll be working on painting leaves. Oh I guess I should review some of my sketches too 5 minute draws are sometimes silly.

5 Tips to Paint Better

Or is it the other way around? I get so frustrated when this idea happens. I go and paint it and I’m not happy. I thought that by just getting right in to side projects I could gain practice. Yes I have fun but there’s a better way. I love LOVE my ideas and the color…I’d say I have an eye for choosing amazing color.

My problem is in the silly mistakes I make. Here they are:

  1. Master transparencies

Learning to paint with transparencies creates easy practice. I used black and used various tones of black.  I use too much water at times and I don’t allow for one place to dry before I move on to the next. I have this need to keep painting over and over the same spot. The flower looks cool here.

The element of Value to draw shapes

2. Use the right brush for the job.

If you’re paining a lovely watercolor wash then use a big round brush from 10-14 or bigger! I’ve learned that a really good brush can do some detailed work as well as paint washes

3. Take your time and let one area dry before you paint the area next to it.

Seriously go slow and enjoy! I do this all the time! It’s why a perfectly awesome painting gets smudges and yeah look:

4. Have enough space to paint.

I paint where ever when ever I can. Sometimes I have trouble seeing. Silly but it’s true. Make sure you can see and make sue you have lot’s of space to freely move your notepad or paper around. You don’t have to paint in one position. Which brings me to my last tip.

5. Don’t take anyone’s word for it.

Do your own practice and observation. What works for them will not work for you! Yes by all means take a good class Ana Victoria Calderon! She’s a queen of watercolor. Just show up everyday and you’ll figure out how you like to hold you brush, what paints you like best and even what you love to paint best.

Mosaic Watercolor Masterpiece

That’s the crazy wonderful thing about freedom…you are free to create what you want.  That’s a big question and a scary responsibility.

Oh but imagine all the WONDERFUL impossibilities that ARE possible.

I had to think up a good quote.  I wanted the word masterpiece to be a mosaic. I love Eric Carle’s collage art. I’m encouraged every time I read the Hungry Caterpillar to a classroom of 1st grades.  We get excited EVERY time.  From collage art to the BIG idea that art can be anything you want it to be, I’m amazed!

A True Artist Quote

Let yourself go. Go Mad. Go Bonkers. Lose Yourself.

I love the color and that the words freedom, creates and masterpiece all create a movement leading from one to another. This love wouldn’t have happened without the entire process of letting yourself go. I had an idea and started with a color palette that best expressed my idea. I mixed up the colors and oh the color in the word creates happened! I probably need to rework the freedmom color them. I will. Let’s do add that to my claendar.

Losing yourself helps you find yourself.

Just now as I uploaded the picture I can see the promise of this piece. I’m in love with the idea and the mosaic just takes my breath away. Let’s be honest my heart aches because I see that I need to focus on the nitty-gritty of pulse and precision. I mean the color scheme is to die for but, the smudges and the staying in the lines… oh I get so excited. I know I have awesome ideas. No one will ever know how awesome they are, if I don’t work on the skill. At least I know what needs working and what doesn’t. Let’s work on the quote. Let’s paint!

Love Poem Update

A quick update for my love poem. I finally think I’ve got it. Have this idea for a beautiful rainbow.  So I had to paint it. I mixed up these colors. Then I wrote my poem with a brown twistable crayon. The layout didn’t work out so well BUT I kept telling myself just paint and practice  and see what happens.  What fabulous advice! Besides I’m so loving the wax crayon with watercolor. My picture taking is well yeah not so good.. The color looks black instead of an awesome brown but who cares. I made some awesome art that I know the world is waiting for. Gosh I hope so. YES!

I just fell in love with applying color. I LOVE painting and knowing that an idea is coming to life. The words live your love story look good. Just drew them but they make great balloons. The whole pink and orange color scheme, well I’m LOVING it.

This whole wonderful  experience had me thinking about my recent plans to just paint and let everything else go. I want to share my work with the world. Famous Justin Bieber words never say never keep ringing in my head. OKAY it’s not just him. It’s the podcast I just listened to. It’s the words the priest said in church. It’s the children who grace my life. It’s the special girl who reminds me that you should NEVER ever give up especially in dark times.

Art is a huge pick me up when I feel doubt creeping back in and want to fall. A warm feeling wraps around my heart , SAYING I GOT YOU. YOU GOT THIS. JUST hold on and together we’ll see it through. You can’t give in.

So yippee, I can’t wait to keep working on my book and painting all of these ideas. I have my daily progress on instagram at myrasletters. I  have this awesome blog but I want to make some changes. Oh brother they are coming soon! So here’s the big news. I won’t be posting anything for the next 40 days. I need time to think and work on me. You bet I will be working on all of my projects and I will be back Easter Sunday! Say!  Maybe this is the perfect time to launch my love poem on etsy.  Who knows where else.  I love each and everyone of you and appreciate you!  I’m jumping up and down. Come on jump with me! Till then feel free to like this post if you’re feeling this poem!

Just Play

Sometimes this is the hardest thing to do. I’m working on the love poem and my deadline is February 14th.   That’s two weeks away and I have no idea what to do! I’ve been sick and can’t seem to get better. Frankly I’m sick of cough drops, coughing and Kleenex. and I know I shouldn’t complain. It’s been hard to just play.  Maybe it’s because I haven’t really taken the time to play. I’ve been feeling pressure to paint just the right piece. The color has to be right. The letters have to be right. Everything has to be right so that the readers can understand what I’m trying to say.  Here’s the twister. The most important part of my art is to  to put myself right there on the watercolor paper and canvas.  I want readers to take in every detail and say,” Yeah I get what she’s trying to say and I can relate! I want my art to be right there always on my mind,  just like the songs I keep singing.  So yeah I want to just play. That’s what I’m going to do! I’m  delaying the launch of my shop till March 20th which is the first day of spring!

Ahhhhh a breath of fresh air!

What did I work on this week?. I love the color teal. This is a great color that conveys many of the emotions in my poem.  I know I want a background  maybe I can use that cool wash you create with a plastic ziploc bag.  You paint the bag. Then press the wet painted side on the paper and press and let dry. I love this idea for the back background!  Tested it! Love the sporadic placement of the paint.

img_20170128_153956_8571

I had this crazy idea to write with acrylic paint. YES write the entire poem in white acrylic paint. The trouble is that acrylic paint is thick and hard to write with. I’ve been practicing! Maybe there is a better way?  I did some research and found out there’s this cool masking fluid pen and YES I am having an idea. Maybe I should try some new acrylic paint because the one I have is old and dry? Who knows I’ll keep playing!

I’ve also just started playing and I love hearts and Valentine’s Day! Love blending two colors. Say….may I can use this blending for my poem? Yes I am feeling better already. I don’t ever want to feel like I’m forcing myself to do art. If I’m not motivated then it’s not the kind of art I want to create-EVER.
